Work-hour math, explained

How to calculate work hours with a break

Subtract the start time from the end time to get the total shift length, then subtract any unpaid break. This calculator performs the same calculation and also converts the result to decimal hours.

Example 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
8 hr 30 min elapsed 30 min break 8 hr paid
01

Break deductions

Enter an unpaid break in minutes or use a quick 15, 30, 45, or 60-minute preset.

02

Overnight shifts

An end time earlier than the start time is automatically calculated as the next day.

03

Decimal hours

Results include both hours and minutes and a two-decimal value useful for timecards.

04

Clock-out planning

Work backward from your required paid hours to see when your shift should end.

Common questions

Work hours calculator FAQ

How do I calculate hours worked with an unpaid break?

Enter your start time and end time, then enter the unpaid break in minutes. The calculator subtracts the break from the elapsed shift.

Does the calculator handle overnight shifts?

Yes. When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats the end time as occurring on the following day.

Can I calculate when I should clock out?

Yes. Enter your start time, the paid hours you need, and any unpaid break. The clock-out planner returns the time your shift should end.

Are my time entries saved?

No application database stores calculator entries. Values are used only to return the result for the current request.

Use results as a helpful estimate. Always compare the calculation with your employer's timekeeping and rounding policies.
